Police make arrest in animal abuse case

Operation Kindness volunteers, staff and community members have some closure in the death of Mercy, a 10-month-old puppy, after a memorial service and an arrest in the case.
The no-kill shelter held a memorial service for Mercy on Saturday after receiving a large amount of response about her case.
Hundreds of people gathered at Operation Kindness to honor the life of Mercy. A memorial service was held and afterward people passed by her spot placing candles and trinkets.
DeShawn Brown, 21, was arrested early Thursday morning and charged in the death of the pit bull puppy.
Brown is being charged with animal cruelty and could serve up to two years in prison if convicted of the felony.
Dallas police were originally called out to the scene where Brown told police the dog had bumped into a grill and caught herself on fire, said Dallas Police Senior Cpl. Jamie Kimbrough. The officer who responded advised Brown to seek help for the injured dog, Kimbrough said.
“Based on the reports from the vet and animal control it was determined that the original statement that the owner made was not correct,” Kimbrough said. “There were also witnesses that came forward and led to the arrest. Animal control also played an important role in this.”
Mercy was doused in gasoline, set on fire and stabbed. She was found on April 14 after a Dallas man found her in a wooded area behind the Rock Creek Apartment Complex in North Dallas.
Mercy went through several surgeries but was unable to pull through. She died April 23 as a result of her injuries.
“This is not the ending we wanted for her,” England said.
