Newman Smith wins battle of Josey Lane
By Justin Thomas, Staff Writer
Newman Smith got its’ first victory of the season, defeating R.L. Turner 55-7 Friday night at Standridge Stadium.
Smith has won the Battle of Josey Lane three years in a row.
Smith moves to 1-8 on the season and 1-6 in district, while Turner falls to 0-9 and 0-6 in district.
Sophomore running back Randall Joyner led the way with 25 carries for 251 yards and four touchdowns.
“That’s what we do,” said Newman Smith coach Paul Ressa. “We’re hanging our hat on the option. That’s our offense, and if everything starts to click it can work like that.”
Smith jumped out to an early six point lead when Joyner scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to finish a five play, 58-yard drive, but the extra point attempt missed left.
Smith went up 13-0 on a 33-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Aldo Quiroga to sophomore receiver Al Lasker. Quiroga finished 7 for 10 for 159 yards, and one touchdown.
Turner quarterback Matthew Bernal threw an interception on the next possession giving Smith the ball first and goal at the six. Joyner ran it in on the next play and the Trojans led 20-0.
Bernal had a tough day throwing the ball, finishing 5 for 13 for 54 yards, with two interceptions. He led the team in rushing with 57 yards on 15 carries, and scored the Lions lone touchdown.
Quiroga would add two rushing touchdowns of his own in the second quarter, and Smith led 34-0 at halftime. Quiroga finished with 72 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
“We played pretty well all year long in spots, and we put it together tonight,” said Ressa.
Smith opened the third quarter with a 12-play, 76-yard touchdown drive. Joyner carried the ball on the first six plays of the drive, and finished it off with a 5-yard touchdown run to put Smith up 40-0.
Joyner added a fourth rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to go up 47-0, and the Trojans would go on to the 55-7 victory.
Turner will finish the season at Hebron next Friday. Hebron is 5-1 in district play, coming off a loss to Flower Mound Marcus.
Smith closes the season against Carrollton Creekview (3-6, 1-5) next Friday at Standridge Stadium, and would like to end the season on a high note.
“We won, rival or no rival it’s a win, and we need to finish the season off right,” said Ressa.
Ressa said that Smith needs to work on its focus heading into the last week of the season. The game got a little sloppy in the second half, with both teams being penalized often. Newman Smith finished with 13 penalties, Turner with 10.
“We lost a little bit of focus here and there,” said Ressa. “The kids just got to learn how to deal with that. We have to focus for 48 minutes. All the little things, no little mistakes, we got to play solid ball for 48 minutes, and do it all the whole time.”
