Bomb threat at RHS a hoax

Published: Thursday, February 14, 2008 6:51 PM CST
A bomb threat Tuesday morning phoned in to Rowlett High School administration proved to be a hoax.

At about 9:53 a.m., a call was received at the school, located at 4700 Kirby Road, indicating a bomb had been placed somewhere inside the school building. The caller, believed to be a teenage male, then hung up the phone.

The Rowlett Police Department responded to the high school and began to work with staff to implement the response plan in place within the Garland ISD for such incidents.

“Our policy is to immediately send patrol supervisors and anyone trained in bomb recognition to the location,” said John Ellison, police spokesman. “We then make the decision on how to search the property.”

The police department indicates the search generally takes place with the help of the property owner.

“Who better knows what should be there in the building than the property owner or someone familiar with the property,” Ellison said. “If a device is found, the building is then evacuated.”

No bomb or explosive devices were discovered Tuesday and school was not interrupted during the search. It is the second bomb threat called in at Rowlett High School this school year.

Should an explosive device have been located, police would have immediately evacuated the building and begun a policy for removal of the device.

“Our policy is to seek assistance from the Garland bomb disposal unit and if we can’t bring them in we’d go to Dallas,” Ellison said.

Responding officers search both the interior and exterior of the building. In the case of Rowlett High School, it can include all school property.

The non-interruption of classes was due to the cooperation and training that has been on-going between the RPD and the GISD in preparation for these and other types of events, a statement from the Rowlett Police Department indicated.

“It is something we practice with them,” Ellison said. “It should just be second place to ensure the safety of the students and staff.”

High schools in North Texas receive numerous bomb threats each year, according to police, and although they may be false the RPD reports that all such calls are taken with the same caution.

No arrests were made and there are no suspects at this time in the case at Rowlett High School. The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the RPD at 972-412-6200.
