Coppell resident is chairman of charity golf tournament
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
On Sept. 22, at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Dallas chapter will host their 23rd annual CREW Classic, a golf tournament that raises money for local charities designed to help improve the lives of Dallas’ women and girls.
Coppell resident Brenda Richardson is the chairman of the event, and is excited to have yet another successful tournament.
Last year, CREW raised $160,000 to donate to a variety of charities, making the Crew Classic one of the top 10 grossing golf tournaments in Dallas. This year 240 participants have already signed up, but Richardson is hoping that number will near 280.
Since the inception of the CREW Classic in 1985, CREW Dallas members have raised more than $2.5 million benefiting more than 40 local non-profit organizations.
Also contributing to the cause are the eight LPGA golfers that attend and participate in the event.
This year’s scheduled attendees are LPGA professionals who have local ties, including Dallas resident Kelli Kuehne, Colin County resident Stephanie Louden and Southlake resident Jill McGill, along with golfers Diana D’Alessio, Leta Lindley, Mhairi McKay, Beth Bader and Vicki Goetze-Ackerman.
“Last year, we had some of the professional golfers like Kelli Kuehne and Jill McGill who attended the event and really enjoyed it,” Richardson said. “They rotate around the golf course and get a chance to play with the participants and give them pointers and advice. Afterward they helped by giving out the trophies and they seemed to really get into it. It didn’t take any convincing at all to have them come out again this year.”
The event is open to men and women and is available for registration up to the day of the event.
Richardson, who has lived in the Dallas area for more than 20 years and works for Marvin F. Poer and Co., has been a member of CREW Dallas since 1993. The organization, which has around 60 chapters nationwide, consists of members from all phases of commercial real estate. Each chapter has different fundraising events to better the lives of the women in their area, but for the previous 23 years CREW Dallas has held the CREW Classic.
This year, proceeds will provide assistance to local organizations funded through Dallas Women’s Foundation; fund research grants for women’s health issues through University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; and support to CREW Foundation.
“We use the money for grants to help with cancer, heart studies and other special care centers,” Richardson said. “And we work with the Genesis Women’s Shelter to help with child abuse. You never know when somebody has an issue that you can help with.”
And for Richardson, the cause hits close to home.
“I’m a breast cancer survivor and so are several other members of CREW Dallas,” Richardson said. “It really makes me that much more passionate about the event and raising money because it helps all of us.”
Player check-in for the tournament begins at 10 a.m. and teenoff is at 11:30 a.m. A golf clinic will also take place from 10:15 to 11 a.m. the morning of the CREW Classic for all registered players. All teams will be provided with caddies from the University of North Texas-
Department of Real Estate & Finance. The day will end with a 19th Hole “After Party” that begins at 5:30 p.m. with a raffle drawing for gifts.
There is also a VIP party for major sponsors Sept. 18th at Azure in Dallas.
Major sponsors and underwriters of the tournament include: LandAmerica/American Tile Company; WindStar Properties, LandAmerica/Butler Burgher; Deloitte, NexBank; Fidelity National Title, Jackson-Shaw; and Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell L.L. P.
