Lewisville: DCTA buys land for Hebron park and ride property
SUBMITTED REPORT
The Denton County Transportation Authority continues to move ahead with plans to develop a regional rail line connecting Denton and Dallas counties. The DCTA closed on the property for the Hebron station on Dec. 22.
The DCTA had closed on the MedPark property in Denton a week before.
The 9.265 acre site, located near the corner of Hebron and Lakepointe Circle, will initially serve as the agency’s park and ride for DCTA’s Interim Commuter Express. Construction on the park and ride facility will begin this spring. The park and ride will open in early 2010. This portion of the project is funded by a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant through the Federal Transit Administration.
The rail platform will be constructed separately and will open when the A-train begins revenue service in December 2010. The Hebron station will be one of five rail stations along the 21-mile corridor adjacent to I-35E that is being partially funded through Regional Toll Revenue Funds. There are two additional stations in Lewisville near downtown Lewisville and at the intersection of Garden Ridge and I-35E.
“Our purchase of property in Lewisville and Denton illustrates our commitment to bringing rail service to Denton County. The progress we have made thus far is a direct result of the hard work of our Board and employees and the support of our local and regional partners,” said Scott Neeley, DCTA executive vice president of rail development. “The city of Lewisville has been a strong supporter of DCTA and we share this momentous occasion with them.”
"This is a big moment in the history of DCTA and a big moment in the history of Lewisville,” said Lewisville Mayor Gene Carey. “We have been working toward regional rail service for many years and this is an important step in that direction. I'm looking forward to riding that first DCTA train two years from now, and I know Lewisville residents and commuters are going to be pleased when that happens."
The rail project is the central element of DCTA’s service plan, and has been strongly endorsed by Denton County voters. In addition to the five rail stations, the A-train project includes a bicycle/pedestrian trail and an operations and maintenance facility. The immediate objective of the project is to have full service between Denton and Carrollton to interface with Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s light rail system in December 2010. This timing will coincide with DART’s opening a section of its Green Line, which will complete a 50 mile segment of regional passenger rail that is detailed in the North Central Texas Council of Government’s Mobility 2030 plan.
