Summer band camp comes to close Friday

Published: Thursday, August 19, 2010 12:24 PM CDT
Since Aug. 2, the Coppell High School marching band has drilled, practiced, sweated and worked hard preparing for the marching band season. The Texas sun has beat down on the young men and women as they filled the air with musical sounds.

They have diligently set goals to perform for their fans and to reach new heights for high school band. The first goal lies just ahead as the summer band camp concludes with a preview of the band for the community at 7:45 p.m. Aug. 20 in the stadium.

There is also a dinner planned before the marching event. Tickets for the dinner had to be purchased by Aug. 18, as no tickets will be available at the door. A bake sale will also be held.

Admission to the concert is free and the community is invited to attend.

“This is the 20th year for the ‘welcome back concert,’” said Scott Mason, CISD director of instrumental music and head CHS band director. “It provides a goal for our students that have been working so hard, it lets the parents see what their son or daughter has learned in summer band camp and offers an opportunity for the entire community to see what the 2010 CHS Band is like.”

The band has spent hours working on the drills and music preparing for the event.

“Band camp has been going really great,” said Violet Coker, head drum major for the band. “The kids have had fun unifying and working together, even though they have been giving up their summer.”

Even with the searing heat, the band members have been working hard.

“On a daily basis, we deal with temperatures up to 107 degrees,” said Emily Hyslop, senior assistant band major. “The leadership and drum majors make sure that the students are hydrated and that we keep a close eye for any signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion, and our wonderful band parents provide a cooling station for the students as well.”

Band practices are twice daily from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

“We’re all very excited for this season and are striving to do our best this year,” Coker said. “The band just really wants to do better than Coppell has ever done. We’re very excited for the show and can’t wait to put it all together and compete.”

The show the band will present this season is different than any other they have performed.

“It will be a totally new type of show for the CHS band,” Mason said. “We have huge paintings by Norman Rockwell on the field representing the music being performed at that time. Hopefully, the music, paintings and drill will all go together to create a great effect.”

The music is mainly by composers who were writing around the 1920s and 1930s. It is sort of an Americana show with Rockwell’s artwork as the backdrop to the band’s drill and music, Mason said.

The drum majors have high hopes for the coming season.

“As a senior drum major, this is going to be such an exciting year,” Hyslop said. “I am 100 percent confident that the CHS Marching Band will be not only successful this coming school year, but band members will grow in service to others and grow within themselves.”
